Promise Chukwumati, a 75-year-old man, has been sentenced by a family court sitting in Port Harcourt to 10 years imprisonment without the option of a fine for defiling an 11-year-old girl.
Justice Rita Oguguo, while delivering the judgment, also ordered him to pay N1 million in compensation to the victim’s family and directed that his name be entered into the Rivers State Sex Offenders Register.
According to the judge, the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court heard that Chukwumati repeatedly had unlawful sexual intercourse with the 11-year-old in his apartment after luring her with money while she was on her way to school.
