Some persons on social media have expressed their disapproval at Governor Wike’s move to demolish two hotels in Eleme local government area for flouting the lockdown order.
Elanhub correspondent, Emmanuel Nwafor who monitored reactions on different social media platforms, noted that some individuals believe that the state government’s action is quite draconian, and devoid of empathy.
One Facebook user indicated that the state government lacks the requisite constitutional powers to arbitrarily demolish properties without a subsisting court order. Another user stated thus:
“The hotels should be converted to isolation centres and not demolished”. Others questioned whether the demolition of the hotels was the only option available to the governor.
The Rivers State Government had earlier announced the auction of some vehicles impounded during the lockdown and the arrest of some lockdown offenders.
Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas are still on lockdown till further notice.
