Lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have donated their one-month salary, to help the state fight against the spread of Coronavirus. The Speaker of the House, Hon. Ikuinyi O. Ibani, made this statement while interacting with journalists in Port Harcourt on April 1.
According to the speaker, the House collectively reached this decision following an interface between its committees and the agencies of the state responsible for the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Obani said: “Based on this directive and the feedback so far received from the Joint Committee on the proactive measures put in place by the State Government, we have resolved that one month salaries of all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly members be deducted by the Rivers State Ministry of Finance and remitted to the Committee set up by his Excellency Nyesom Wike, the Governor of Rivers State to combat the COVID-19 Pandemic in the State.”
Other federal officials including Members of the House of Representatives had earlier resolved to donate their two months salaries, to assist the federal government in the fight against COVID-19.
Other notable Nigerians as well as corporate organisations have also made financial donations to help combat the global pandemic.
