The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the death of 10 police officers during an encounter with suspected bandits in Kebbi State.
The incident occurred on Monday, along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area, when police operatives intercepted a heavily armed group suspected to be moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, at least 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.
However, 10 police personnel were killed in the gun battle, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. Two civilians also lost their lives during the confrontation.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed deep grief over the loss of the officers and condoled with their families and loved ones.
Disu described the deaths as a painful loss to the police and the nation, stressing that the officers paid the ultimate price while defending the lives and property of citizens.
He assured the bereaved families that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would not be forgotten, adding that their memories would continue to be honoured by the Nigeria Police Force.
The remains of the deceased officers have been conveyed to Birnin Kebbi, while the situation in the area has been brought under control.
The Force said additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to strengthen operations and pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.
The police further assured the families of the fallen officers and injured personnel of its continued support, while reaffirming its commitment to bringing the fleeing suspects to justice.
