The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has arrested Hafsat Abubakar over the circulation of a false notice claiming that OPay Digital Services Limited had shut down its operations.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said in a statement on Thursday that the suspect was arrested on September 4, 2026, following digital forensic analysis that traced the notice to her X handle, @HAIFAH_ER_ABBA.
Iniedu said Abubakar later shared the notice on another X account, @CUTE_HAFSERH, with the caption, “REMOVE YOUR MONEY NOW.”
The fake notice, which carried OPay’s logo, branding and purported management endorsement, reportedly garnered about 572,000 views within minutes.
Three Apple mobile phones were recovered from the suspect, while investigation continues to identify others involved in creating and disseminating the notice.
The police said the suspect and anyone else found culpable would be charged to court after investigations.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, commended the NPF-NCCC and urged the public to verify information concerning financial institutions through their official channels.
