The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended a 31-year-old man, Kelechi Wufurum, over the alleged killing of a commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Abobo, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
The victim, aged 51, was reportedly deceived into travelling to the community under the guise of a transport job, unaware of the suspect’s alleged intentions.
Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed the development on Tuesday at the command headquarters along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
According to her, an altercation occurred between the suspect and the victim before Wufurum allegedly attacked the driver with a cutlass near a forest, leading to his death. The suspect then fled with the victim’s minibus, which he later sold for N2.4 million along with the victim’s mobile phone.
Iringe-Koko added that following a report, the Police Special Operations and Intelligence Team launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of the suspect and those who allegedly purchased the stolen items.
The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, detailing how he lured the victim into a secluded area, overpowered him, and made away with his belongings.
