The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) says it has installed electricity meters in seven government-owned schools across Rivers State as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
The beneficiary institutions are Model Secondary School, GRA; Pabod Model Secondary School, Bernard Carr; Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Rumuokrushi; Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Rukpokwu; Township Model Primary School 2, Moscow Road; Government Secondary School, Borokiri; and Government Secondary School, Umusoya.
The initiative is aimed at improving electricity safety and creating a better learning environment in the schools, while also easing the burden of accumulated electricity debts.
PHED Head of Communications, Mrs. Olubukola Olawale, said the company resolved to write off outstanding debts owed by the schools to ensure that previous bills were not transferred to the newly installed meters.
She disclosed that Model Secondary School, GRA, had more than N1.5 million in outstanding debt written off, while Government Secondary School, Borokiri, received a waiver on a N500,000 debt.
The school principals reportedly expressed appreciation for the intervention, saying it would enhance the learning environment and reduce the financial pressure associated with electricity bills.
PHED also trained staff of the beneficiary schools on the proper operation and management of the newly installed meters.
