The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has affirmed former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election despite disruptions surrounding its Special National Convention in Abuja.
In a communiqué issued after the convention on Saturday, the party alleged that its planned venue, A Class Event Centre, cancelled its booking following threats from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. According to the party, the venue management informed it that the minister had threatened to revoke the centre’s Certificate of Occupancy and demolish the facility if the event was allowed to hold.
The party further claimed that security agencies deployed heavily around the venue on Friday evening, restricting access to the area and creating tension ahead of the convention.
Following an emergency meeting involving members of the Board of Trustees, Interim National Working Committee, National Executive Committee, state chairmen, candidates, and other stakeholders, party leaders resolved to avoid confrontation and proceed with the convention’s primary objective.
The stakeholders subsequently adopted a motion affirming former President Goodluck Jonathan as the PDP’s presidential candidate and flag bearer for the 2027 election. The party said arrangements for the formal presentation of the candidate and flag handover ceremony would be announced later.
The convention also charged the party’s Interim National Working Committee to intensify preparations for the 2027 elections and ensure the party’s full participation in the electoral process.
The communiqué was signed by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong.
