Rivers State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has in strong terms condemned the physical assault on one of its members, Nkams Johnson by a soldier.
Nkams Johnson, a videographer with Silverbird Television Port Harcourt was today, flogged at Ikokwu junction, by one of the officers of the Nigerian Army deployed to enforce the lockdown order by the Rivers State Government.
A statement jointly signed by the Chairman Stanley Job Stanley and Secretary of the Union, Ike Nwigodo described, the act as barbaric and not expected of a well trained soldier anywhere in the world.
The NUJ called on law enforcement agencies in the state to stop harrassing its members who are putting their lives on the line to report the efforts of the government in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
The union further, called on the state government and multinationals to consider issuing palliatives to journalists in the state.
