The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, has urged residents to pay closer attention to their heart health and seek medical attention for unusual or persistent symptoms as the world marks World Heart Day 2026.
The call was contained in a statement signed by the association’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Duukori ThankGod, on behalf of the Chairman, Dr. (Prof.) Ureh Annabel Oparaodu.
The association, in its message themed, “World Heart Day 2026: Don’t Miss a Beat. Don’t Trivialize a Sign,” warned that symptoms such as breathlessness, unusual chest discomfort, unexplained tiredness and changes in heartbeat should not be dismissed as stress, age or the demands of a busy day.
According to the NMA, heart disease can affect anyone, while some symptoms may go unnoticed or be mistaken for less serious conditions.
It urged residents to know their health numbers and risk factors, engage in regular physical activity, eat healthy meals and avoid smoking.
The association particularly advised residents not to ignore unusual or persistent symptoms, stressing the importance of seeking appropriate medical attention when something feels different.
“Your heart works every second for you. Give it a reason to keep beating strong,” the NMA said.
