The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to the Federal Government and Nigerians after the Super Falcons failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In a statement issued on behalf of the NFF Executive Committee, the Super Falcons and the wider Nigerian football community, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed regret over the outcome.
Gusau acknowledged the disappointment among millions of Nigerians who had backed the team and said the Falcons entered the competition with the expectations and support of the entire nation.
He said the federation was particularly sorry that the team could not produce the result expected at this stage of the tournament.
The NFF also directed a special apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognising his strong backing for Nigerian sports, especially the development and welfare of women athletes.
According to the federation, Tinubu had shown exceptional commitment to sports development, recalling the substantial financial rewards, national honours, houses and reception granted to the Super Falcons following their previous WAFCON triumph.
The NFF also highlighted the President’s continued support for the Super Eagles and other national teams.
