The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has called for greater prioritisation of girl-child education over early marriage, stressing the importance of providing girls with equal opportunities to achieve their potential.
The commission made the call in a message to mark the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, emphasising that access to quality education would empower girls to contribute to the development of a prosperous and sustainable Niger Delta region.
According to the NDDC, educated women across the world are making significant contributions to leadership, governance, business and other fields, helping to drive economic growth and societal development.
It stressed that the Niger Delta must not be left behind, adding that every girl child deserves a safe and healthy childhood, equal opportunities, quality education and the right to personal development.
The commission also reaffirmed the need to empower girls to reach their full potential and play meaningful roles in the development of their communities and society at large.
The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually on October 11 to promote the rights, empowerment and well-being of girls.
