The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended the party’s newly introduced loyalty oath for candidates, saying it is designed to discourage defections and strengthen party discipline.
Speaking on Channels Television, National Secretary of the NDC, Ikenna Enekweizu rejected claims that the policy is unconstitutional. He maintained that members who voluntarily join the party are bound by its constitution and decisions made by its duly constituted authorities.
According to him, the requirement for candidates to sign an affidavit of loyalty is backed by provisions in the NDC constitution.
The NDC, which announced the policy earlier this week, said the move is aimed at safeguarding the party’s institutional integrity by ensuring that elected officials remain committed to the platform throughout their tenure.
