The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to broadcasters, raising concerns over increasing violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in news, current affairs, and political programmes.
In a press release dated April 17, 2026, the Commission said it had observed a sustained rise in breaches of the 6th Edition of the Code, noting that many broadcast platforms were deviating from their core responsibility of delivering accurate, balanced, and professional information to the public.
The NBC warned that as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, it would enforce strict and uncompromised compliance with all provisions of the Code. It stressed the need for fairness, balance, accuracy, and the avoidance of hate speech, incitement, and disrespect toward constitutional institutions.
Highlighting key concerns, the Commission pointed to what it described as a “crisis of anchor and presenter professionalism.” It reminded broadcasters that presenters are prohibited from expressing personal opinions during programmes, in line with professional standards.
The regulator also cited several sections of the Code mandating equitable representation of all sides in matters of public interest, preferably within the same broadcast, to ensure fairness and balance.
On political coverage, the NBC cautioned against the use of broadcast platforms to disseminate inflammatory or divisive content. It warned that broadcasters must not air materials capable of inciting crime, promoting hate, or undermining national unity and the sovereignty of Nigeria.
The Commission further expressed concern over what it termed the growing misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors across party lines. It emphasized that any content capable of encouraging disorder, subverting constituted authority, or compromising the country’s unity would not be tolerated.
The NBC reiterated that broadcasters must exhibit the highest level of professionalism, especially when handling sensitive issues such as politics, communal conflicts, and war.
It also warned that anchors and presenters who express personal opinions as facts, intimidate guests, or deny fair hearing to opposing views risk facing sanctions for breaching the Code.
The Commission urged all stakeholders in the broadcast industry to adhere strictly to ethical standards in order to safeguard the integrity of the media and ensure responsible coverage in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
