The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a fresh ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike if its demands are not met by 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10.
The association said medical services in public hospitals across the country would be suspended if the government fails to implement agreements previously reached with the doctors.
The decision was announced at the end of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Gombe State.
NARD expressed dissatisfaction with the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, citing persistent challenges affecting the welfare and performance of resident doctors.
Among its grievances are the alleged harassment and attacks on doctors while on duty, poor remuneration, unpaid salary and promotion arrears, unfavourable working conditions, and what it described as the unfair treatment of resident doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
The association urged the Federal Government to address the issues before the expiration of the deadline to avert a nationwide disruption of healthcare services.
