Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor.
Garo, who is the son-in-law of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, was nominated following the resignation of Aminu Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. Gwarzo stepped down after a political fallout with Yusuf and subsequently defected.
In a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said the nomination aligns with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which authorizes a governor to appoint a deputy when a vacancy arises.
He added that the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders and urged the Assembly to approve Garo’s nomination.
