The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distanced itself from recent media reports suggesting it has recognised any individual as the Labour Party’s national chairman, declaring such claims as false and misleading.
In a statement, INEC clarified that names appearing on its website, including that of Julius Abure, were uploaded in compliance with earlier court orders, not the latest Supreme Court judgment. The commission added that it is currently reviewing the implications of the apex court’s recent ruling, which affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as head of the party’s Caretaker Committee.
In response, Abia State Governor Alex Otti called for Abure’s arrest, accusing him of impersonation and flouting the Supreme Court decision. Otti described Abure’s purported suspension of him from the party as a “desperate act,” urging security agencies and INEC to enforce the court’s judgment.
