The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems and a mock presidential election to strengthen preparations for the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), disclosed this while receiving the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan said the proposals were prompted by concerns over the performance of election technology during the 2023 general election and are aimed at testing the commission’s systems and operational readiness before the 2027 polls.
He said the initiatives, though not captured in INEC’s budget, would be pursued if necessary to boost electoral credibility. He added that the commission is also reviewing its cybersecurity architecture while continuing to deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
The INEC chairman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting credible and transparent elections, while Montgomery pledged continued UK support for Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.
