Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights while ensuring the state’s peace and security remain intact.
Speaking at the 158th State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, on Wednesday, Governor Diri stated that his government was not against public rallies but stressed the need for caution, particularly in light of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
He emphasized that Bayelsa and Rivers were closely linked and that instability in Rivers could have repercussions in Bayelsa. “We are not a government that goes against the rule of law. We cherish and protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said. “However, as the chief security officer of the state, I must ensure that peace and security are maintained.”
Diri clarified that while citizens were free to exercise their fundamental rights, any planned gathering must adhere to proper protocols, including notifying the state government. He cited the example of the First Lady, who had formally informed the government of her scheduled visit on Thursday at the invitation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He urged Bayelsans to give the First Lady a warm reception while calling on residents to prioritize peace and stability in the state.
