Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a 50 per cent increase in overhead expenditure for the State Judiciary and its institutions to meet operational needs, improve judicial welfare and support training for judicial officers and staff.
Fubara announced the approval during the special court session marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Legal Year at the High Court Complex, Port Harcourt, on Thursday.
Represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to judicial independence, assuring judges and magistrates of continued support to enhance justice delivery.
He acknowledged challenges facing the Judiciary, including inadequate infrastructure and manpower, heavy caseloads and delays in the administration of justice, while pledging to respect its constitutional autonomy and provide necessary resources without interference.
The governor also highlighted efforts to strengthen the institution through the appointment of additional judges and magistrates, digitalisation of case management and improved access to justice.
In his address, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, commended Fubara for supporting the Judiciary and urged judicial officers to uphold their oaths and remain fair, independent and accountable.
Amadi also called for improved manpower and conditions of service to enhance justice delivery.
The President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Ihemnacho Wilfred Chibuzor, said a well-motivated Judiciary would promote integrity and help eliminate corruption.
The new legal year was kick-started with a Thanksgiving and Rededication Service at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Rebisi, earlier in the day.
