MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: “For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it and I will give all Judah into the hand of the King of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.” (Jer.20:4)
READ: JERE.20:1-6
Now Pashur the son of Immer the priest, who was also chief governor in the house of the LORD, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. 2 Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD. 3 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him, The LORD hath not called thy name Pashur, but Magormissabib. 4 For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends: and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it: and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword. 5 Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon. 6 And thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends, to whom thou hast prophesied lies.
One of the popular priests and political leaders of Jeremiah’s time was called Pushur. He was the senior pastor in Jeremiah’s temple but was very far away from God and His will. He judged Jeremiah’s prophecy and gave him a dirty slap because he didn’t believe that God was speaking through him. We do not advocate insubordination or rebellion, but we must learn to follow men only as they follow Christ (1cor.11:1). The godless big pastor captured Jeremiah (the true oracle of God) and put him into prison overnight, probably thinking to intimidate him.
On the next day, when he brought him out from the dungeon, Jeremiah had a fresh message from the Lord which was no longer for the whole of Israel but for this particular priest. Compromising the truth because of the opposition you faced the last time amount to cowardice. This is the difference between the church of today and the church first century. There is time for everything (Ecc.3:10). Until you have seen something worth dying for, life is useless and meaningless. Telling the truth and standing for the truth is the mark of true discipleship. The truth was secured by the shading of the innocent blood of Jesus Christ. The apostle of old shed their blood to propagate and defend it. Those who have been bought by the truth should be willing to go to the extra mile in selling the truth to the next generation. Living by the truth and propagating it is the primary purpose of existence.
TURNING POINT: Living by the truth and propagating it is the primary purpose of existence.
PRAYER POINT: Father, grant me the courage to speak the truth at all cost.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: PS. 79,80.80; ROM.8:1-18
