The Federal Government has announced plans to gradually phase out electricity subsidies beginning in 2027 as part of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this during a media briefing with journalists in Abuja on Friday, stating that while the subsidy would be withdrawn in phases, Nigerians would continue to benefit from government interventions.
Tegbe also assured consumers that there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, stressing that the reform process would be carefully implemented to protect citizens.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has relied on government subsidies for years to bridge the gap between the cost of generating and transmitting power and the revenue collected by electricity distribution companies from consumers.
