The Federal Government has reaffirmed plans to gradually remove electricity subsidies and implement cost-reflective tariffs nationwide, while promising targeted assistance for low-income and vulnerable households to ease the impact of the reforms.
Special Adviser to the President on Power Infrastructure, Sadiq Wanka, disclosed this at an event organised by Sahara Group in Lagos. The event, themed “Energising Africa’s Future: Legacy, Impact, and Transformation,” focused on sustainable energy development and the future of Africa’s power sector.
Wanka said the government had already begun the transition through cost-reflective tariffs for Band A customers and would extend the policy to other electricity users alongside measures to protect vulnerable consumers.
He explained that the planned Power Consumer Assistance Fund would provide financial support to poorer households as the reforms are implemented, adding that the nationwide rollout of cost-reflective tariffs with consumer protection measures is expected within the next year.
