ESOCS Devotional 8 June 2026 – The Burning and Shining Light
MEMORY VERSE: “He was a burning and shining light; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.” John 5:35
TEXT: JOHN 5:35-END
He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41 “I do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Light is a major necessity for quality existence both in heaven and on earth. The presence of darkness stampedes, frustrates, and disorganizes the entire system. The creation story lends credence to this in Genesis 1:1-3. Hence, light is of high demand both by God who is Light Himself and man. It is worthy of note that light has two basic capacities:
The shining capacity: This enables for illumination, vision, clarity, and direction. This capacity forbids the existence of darkness. God’s word says, “And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not” (John 1”5); “… but the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day” (Prov. 4:18); “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD id risen upon thee” (Isaiah 60:1).
The burning capacity: The burning attribute of light enables heat, transforms, and consumes the consumables. When it hits its target, light does not spare. Interestingly, our text uses these two major characteristics of light to describe a man (John 5:35). God wants us not only to exist as the light of the world (Matt. 5:14) but to maximize the full capacities the light possesses: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:16). We need to shine the light that we carry at all times to eliminate darkness wherever we find ourselves.
The light is meant to shine for direction, to eliminate the confusion and frustration of our generation. We must become mobile light that shines away the trouble of our generation.
The Holy Bible says, “And of the angels he saith, who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire” (Heb. 1:7). As the light of the world, we should burn like flames of fire. Burn off all forms of unrighteousness; burn off evil and wickedness in our generation; burn of immorality and cultism; burn off corruption and fraudulent practices in the church. Burn off pride and arrogance thereby causing a total transformation in the life of the people.
Reflection
- Connect to the light if you must shine and burn.
- Do not hide the light, shine it to your generation.
- Allow the light burn off the debris in your life, so it can burn effectively outside.
Prayers
- Lord, we thank you for being our light (Psalm 27:1). We ask that you grant us the grace to shine and burn in our world, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
