ESOCS Devotional 5 August 2026 – Careful Attention To The Gospel Message
MEMORY VERSE: Heb. 2:1“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”(NIV).
TEXT: Hebrew 2:1-9
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4 God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?
5 For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. 6 But one testified in a certain place, saying:
“What is man that You are mindful of him,
Or the son of man that You take care of him?
7 You have made him a little lower than the angels;
You have crowned him with glory and honor,
And set him over the works of Your hands.
8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”
For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

God has spoken to us through the scriptures. From Genesis to Revelation we see the revelation of who God is and how He wants us to relate with him and with our fellow human beings. What God says through the Bible should be our guide as long as we live on earth. In our study today, we are looking at how we can make what we read from the scriptures part of our daily life.
In the first place, we are to pay attention and observe every word contained in the scripture. This means that we should learn the meaning of every word we read or hear. When we learn, we can explain. If we can explain, then we have understood.
The next thing to do is to decide to apply what we know about the word of God. Application of the word of God brings about change in lifestyle. That is, changing from a sinful life style to a godly lifestyle that is prescribed by the very scripture we study. This will keep us away from sin. (Heb. 2:1).
Again, we must know that the scripture binds everybody – both believers and non-believers. There is no one who will not answer questions about his life on earth. This shows that it is not to our benefit to ignore the word of God. We have to pay attention and apply them to our very self. Heb. 2:2-3.
The scripture is all about our salvation through Jesus Christ. It is to our greater credit if we hearken to the words of the scriptures (Heb. 2:3). For those who receive and believe the words of the gospel, a great difference is made in their lives. It is common knowledge among true converts that salvation comes with personal experience of signs, wonders, diverse miracles, and manifestation of gifts of the Holy Spirit. (Heb. 2:1)
In all, we are called upon to know God and His salvation through the gospel message. With the gospel message ruling our lives, we get lifted above sin and all the troubles that the devil is bringing upon the earth. We get lifted above hell. Heb. 2:5-9.

Can you say that you are lifted above sin?
Prayer
Father, give me a heart to understand and the will to stand by your word. Your word can sustain me. In Jesus name. Amen.
