ESOCS Devotional 4 August 2026 – Know Your Standing in Christ

MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, whom seek ye?”

TEXT: Deuteronomy 4:4-24

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?”

And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”

Knowledge they say is power. You need to know and believe what God has designed for you and the kind of life or purpose you are to fulfil on earth. Ignorance of what God has for you will make and keep you weak.

In our text today, we see that Judas led agents of the state at the instance of the High Priest and the Pharisees to arrest Jesus. Jesus was not ignorant of what the prophets and the scripture say about his experience in the hands of the enemy. Verse 4 of our text says “Jesus therefore knowing all that things that should come upon him….”

While we expect God’s blessings, we should search the scripture to know those stepping stones that will lead us to the place of God’s blessing. The arrest and crucifixion of Jesus led to his resurrection and ascension to glory.

Truly, it is not every situation that a Christian should fight against in battle. It is not in every situation that we should cast and bound. Learn to endure and pass through the pain. Jesus warned Peter in verse 11 “… Put up thy sword unto the sheath: the cup which the father hath gave me, shall I not drink it?”

The truth is that if is not the will of God, no power of man, spirit or beast can prevail against a Christian. The power in us is greater than the power in the world. They must fall and tremble before us. In verses 5, 6 where the soldiers confronted Jesus, the soldiers fell to the ground when Jesus merely told them. “I am he that you seek.”

The Bible teaches of things of joy and honour that awaits believers. It also teaches of persecution, denials, sufferings etc that we must pass through. We must learn, believe and practice the scriptures when we encounter situations. The Lord will be our guide.

Question

Can any situation prevail against us if God says No?

Prayer

Father, may I find strength of your Spiritas I journey through life in Jesus name. Amen.
