ESOCS Devotional 4 October 2026 – Filthy Garment to Fine Garment
MEMORY VERSE: “And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” Zechariah 3:4 KJV
TEXT: ZECHARIAH 3: 1-10
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel.
4 Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.”
5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.”
So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by.
6 Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:
‘If you will walk in My ways,
And if you will keep My command,
Then you shall also judge My house,
And likewise have charge of My courts;
I will give you places to walk
Among these who stand here.
8 ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest,
You and your companions who sit before you,
For they are a wondrous sign;
For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH.
9 For behold, the stone
That I have laid before Joshua:
Upon the stone are seven eyes.
Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’
Says the Lord of hosts,
‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
10 In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts,
‘Everyone will invite his neighbor
Under his vine and under his fig tree.’ ”

Joshua was Israel’s high priest when the remnant returned to Jerusalem and began to rebuild the walls (Haggai 1:1, 12; 2:4). For the former visions to be fulfilled, God’s people in Judah had to be cleansed. God had promised that He would dwell with His people. But before this could happen, the people had to be cleansed. Since the priests had formerly allowed the apostasy of the Israelite nation to take place (Ezekiel 22:26), the cleansing of the nation started with the cleansing of Joshua, the high priest.
Joshua was the representative for the people. His filthy garment illustrated the guilt of his people’s sin (Isaiah 4:4; 64:6). By God’s grace, however, he was given new and luxurious garments to wear – from a filthy garment to a fine garment. His people would be adorned as a bride before the bridegroom.
For us, Zechariah’s vision graphically portrays how we can obtain God’s mercy. We do nothing ourselves. It is at God’s initiative that our filthy garments (sins) are purged and cleansed. Thereafter, God provides us with new, clean clothes, which are the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Action expected from us is to repent and ask God for forgiveness. When Satan tries to make you dirty and unworthy, remember that the clean clothes of Christ’s righteousness make you worthy to draw near to God.
Reflections
- Are there moments you feel backsliding and you think no hope for you?
Prayer
- Dear Lord, remove my filthy garment and clothe me in a clean one.
