ESOCS Devotional 30 April 2026 – There’s Neither Adversary Nor Misfortune
MEMORY VERSE: “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side. There is neither adversary nor misfortune.” 1 Kings 5:4 ESV
TEXT: 1 KINGS 5:1-12
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, because he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always loved David. 2 Then Solomon sent to Hiram, saying:
3 You know how my father David could not build a house for the name of the Lord his God because of the wars which were fought against him on every side, until the Lord put his foes under the soles of his feet.
4 But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor evil occurrence.
5 And behold, [d]I propose to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spoke to my father David, saying, “Your son, whom I will set on your throne in your place, he shall build the house for My name.”
6 Now therefore, command that they cut down cedars for me from Lebanon; and my servants will be with your servants, and I will pay you wages for your servants according to whatever you say. For you know there is none among us who has skill to cut timber like the Sidonians.
7 So it was, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly and said,
Blessed be the Lord this day, for He has given David a wise son over this great people!
8 Then Hiram sent to Solomon, saying:
I have considered the message which you sent me, and I will do all you desire concerning the cedar and cypress logs.
9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon to the sea; I will float them in rafts by sea to the place you indicate to me, and will have them broken apart there; then you can take them away. And you shall fulfill my desire by giving food for my household.
10 Then Hiram gave Solomon cedar and cypress logs according to all his desire. 11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand kors of wheat as food for his household, and twenty kors of pressed oil. Thus Solomon gave to Hiram year by year.
12 So the Lord gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him; and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty together.

Peace is a rare and precious gift, not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of God’s divine rest and protection. In this verse, Solomon testifies to a season of calm: “There is neither adversary nor misfortune.” These words reflect the favour of God in Solomon’s reign and the fulfilment of promises made to David, his father.
But this peace didn’t just happen. It came after years of war, hardship, and faithful obedience. It was the fruit of God’s covenant and Solomon’s reverence. This verse reminds us that God brings seasons of rest, where enemies are silenced, and troubles are removed, not by our might, but by His mercy.
You may be in a storm now, or perhaps you’re walking in peace. Either way, know that God is the giver of rest. If you’re battling adversaries or misfortunes, trust that a season of calm is possible. If you’re already in a peaceful place, use that season to build, serve, and draw closer to God, just like Solomon did in preparing to build the temple.
True rest isn’t found in circumstances, but in God’s abiding presence. He is the One who removes adversity and misfortune when we trust and walk in His ways.
Reflections
- Am I currently in a season of peace or one of adversity? How am I responding to it?
- Do I recognize God as the source of my rest and protection, or do I rely on my own strength?
- How can I use a peaceful season to serve God’s purpose more faithfully?
- What adversaries or troubles do I need to surrender to God today, trusting Him for rest?
Action Step
Take 5–10 minutes today to reflect on the areas of your life where God has given you rest and thank Him specifically for each one. If you’re in a difficult season, write a prayer of surrender, asking God to bring you into a place of peace and rest. Use the peace you have today to encourage someone else who may be facing adversity.
Prayer
- Lord, you are the God who gives peace. Thank you for the times you’ve silenced my enemies and calmed my storms.
- Help me to trust you in adversity and to serve you diligently in times of rest.
- Teach me to recognize your hand in every season and to walk with wisdom, gratitude, and purpose; in Jesus’ name. Amen.
