ESOCS Devotional 28 April 2026 – Behold the Lamb of God
MEMORY VERSE: “And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God!'” John 1:36 NKJV
TEXT: JOHN 1:35-END
Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [n]A Stone).
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

As John the Baptist saw Jesus walking by, he uttered a profound declaration: “Behold the Lamb of God!” This statement was not casual; it was filled with deep prophetic significance. John was pointing to Jesus, not just as a teacher or miracle worker, but as the sacrificial Lamb sent to take away the sin of the world.
To the Jewish audience, this image was unmistakable. Every year, a spotless lamb was sacrificed during Passover to symbolize God’s mercy and deliverance. Now, John was proclaiming that Jesus Himself was the ultimate Passover Lamb, whose sacrifice would bring eternal redemption.
Today, we too are invited to “behold”; to fix our eyes on Jesus, the Lamb of God. In Him, we see perfect love, humility, obedience, and the ultimate price paid for our salvation. As we behold Him, our hearts are transformed. We move from guilt to grace, from striving to surrender, from sin to sanctification.
Beholding is not a glance; it is a gaze. Take time today not just to acknowledge Jesus, but to contemplate who He is and what He has done for you.
Reflections
- What does it mean to you personally that Jesus is the Lamb of God?
- How often do you truly “behold” Jesus, not just with your eyes, but with your heart and mind?
- In what ways has the sacrifice of Christ changed your life and outlook?
- Are there distractions or sins keeping you from seeing Jesus today?
Action Step
Set aside 10–15 minutes today to behold Jesus. Read John 1:29-36 slowly, and prayerfully. Reflect on the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice. If possible, take communion or write a short prayer or journal entry thanking Him for being the Lamb who takes away your sin. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you live in response to that love, in holiness, gratitude, and obedience.
Prayer
- Lamb of God, I thank you for taking my place on the cross. You were spotless and pure, yet you bore my guilt.
- Help me to behold you every day, not as a distant Saviour, but as the One who gave everything for me.
- Teach me to live in the light of your sacrifice, and to share this love with others, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
