ESOCS Devotional 23 September 2026 – Finding Rest To Your Soul
MEMORY VERSE:“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls (MATTHEW 11: 28 – 29 KJV).
TEXT: MATTHEW 11: 20 – 30
Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Rest is God’s weapon to us which the enemy hates. Hence he seeks to get you occupied and stressed up. In this context, rest is not just a physical experience but mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of an individual. In a word, it is all about one’s total well-being. It involves the whole body, soul and spirit being preserved blameless according to scriptures, (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
As humans, we cannot avoid being worried, fearful or anxious. But the word of God is the perfect antidote for all of these troubled moments in a person’s life. To enjoy good health, we are usually counseled to take adequate rest and avoid stress as much as possible. Unfortunately, a person can be resting but not resting. The result is that the person is guilty of stress, not having adequate rest, though physically in bed. This is a clear indication that full and enjoyable rest cannot be done outside Christ. Someone advised, “Hand over your problems to God and go to sleep.”
In Matthew 11, Jesus preaches to the crowds gathered around Him. He speaks of giving rest to the weary, saying, “‘Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light’” (Matt. 11:28–30).
Before Jesus gives His invitation for listeners to come to Him, He has choice words for others in the crowd. He denounces the cities where He’s done the most miracles. He proclaims “woes” on the people who didn’t repent. He says scary stuff to the people rejecting the truth of who He is and the kingdom He’s building: He pronounced judgment on the places where He’s shown up in the greatest ways. Yet the people in these cities rejected Him—and Jesus rebukes them for it. They, of all people, should know better. They should have recognized the Son of God when they saw all He’d done so far (Matt. 11:20–22).
But then, Jesus goes on to say this: “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will….. “(Matt. 11:25–27). The “woes” are spoken to those who rejected Jesus, those who should have believed. They saw His miracles; they saw all He was doing—yet they chose to go their own way. But then Jesus thanks the Father for those who have heard. He says “little children” here, meaning those who are humble and acknowledge their dependence on God.
Jesus gently invites you to bring those burdens to Him, to take His yoke, and to learn from Him. In taking His yoke, we not only discover the gift of rest; we become vessels through which His love shines forth—inviting others to experience this same peace. True rest for your soul awaits, rooted in the assurance that you are not in this alone.
Challenges:
- Are there burdens that you are trying to manage alone?
- Have you found rest for your soul?
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to learn of You, to trust in Your meekness and humility, and to find rest for my soul. Amen.
