ESOCS Devotional 22 April 2026 – The Lord Spoke to Moses Face to Face
MEMORY VERSE: “”The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend…” Exodus 33:11 NIV
TEXT: EXODUS 33:3-10
Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.”
4 And when the people heard this bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. 5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. I could come up into your midst in one moment and consume you. Now therefore, take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do to you.’ ” 6 So the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by Mount Horeb.
7 Moses took his tent and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and called it the tabernacle of meeting. And it came to pass that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp. 8 So it was, whenever Moses went out to the tabernacle, that all the people rose, and each man stood at his tent door and watched Moses until he had gone into the tabernacle. 9 And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. 10 All the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the tabernacle door, and all the people rose and worshiped, each man in his tent door.

What a breath-taking description of intimacy with God: “The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” This verse doesn’t mean Moses saw God’s full glory (which no one can survive), but rather that God communicated with Moses directly, personally, and intimately.
This kind of closeness is rare, but it’s not unreachable. Through Jesus Christ, we now have access to the Father and can enter into a relationship that is marked by closeness, honesty, and friendship. Jesus said in John 15:15, “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends.”
Moses made time for God. He set up the “tent of meeting” outside the camp, away from distractions. And there, in that quiet place, God met with him. It’s a reminder that deep intimacy with God doesn’t happen by accident; it happens by intentional pursuit. The same God who spoke to Moses desires to commune with you, not just as a King or Judge, but as a Father and Friend. The question is, Do you make space to hear His voice?
Reflections
- How would you describe your current relationship with God: distant, casual, or intimate?
- Do you regularly set aside time and space to meet with God like Moses did?
- What distractions or habits might be keeping you from deeper fellowship with God?
- How can you grow in recognizing God’s voice and presence more clearly in your daily life?
Action Step:
Set up your own “tent of meeting” this week – a dedicated, distraction-free place and time to meet with God daily. Turn off your devices, bring your Bible and a journal, and simply spend time with the Lord, talking, listening, worshiping, and waiting. Ask God to speak to you as a friend, and write down what He impresses on your heart.
Prayer
- Lord, thank you for the incredible truth that you desire to speak with me as a friend.
- Forgive me for the times I’ve let other things crowd out my time together.
- Help me to seek you intentionally, to listen attentively, and to walk with you closely.
- Just as you met with Moses, meet with me daily and draw me deeper into your presence, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
