TEXT: JOHN 6:22-40
MEMORY VERSE:
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”John 6:35 KJV
Just like those in the multitudes that sought Jesus because of material blessings that might come from Him in our Biblical text of today, so are many who claim to be Christians today. They follow Jesus for the physical bread, not the spiritual life that will come from Him. They see in Christ Jesus the opportunity for either economic or political gain.
Regardless of the economic state of any man, one’s first concern should be for his spiritual poverty, not his physical poverty. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…” (Matt. 6:33). This is one of the greatest struggles of the poor because of their destitution. Nevertheless, the struggle must be won, for one’s salvation is more important than anything this world can offer. The food that Jesus offers will preserve one’s soul throughout eternity (John 4:14; Eph. 2:8-9). The food this world provides will endure only until the end of this world. God has ordained that through Jesus all the world should receive spiritual food whereby every man who believes should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). The only work one has to do to get this great spiritual offer is to believe and have faith in Jesus that must move one to repentance and obedience of the gospel (Mk. 16:16). It must be more than a verbal acceptance of Jesus. It should be a life commitment.
The plan that was in the mind of God before the creation of the world was to bring redeemed sons and daughters into eternal dwelling through the cross. Jesus was in the world in order to bring about this plan. Therefore, all those who would obediently turn to Jesus would partake of the eternal purpose of God through Him. These would be those who would eventually be raised from the dead when Jesus comes again. They would be raised up in order to dwell with God in eternity because they have molded their lives by the will of God.
As long as you are still breathing, you can seek Jesus, the bread of life (Luke 23: 40-43).
- Take stock of your life now and decide on the bread to accept- physical or spiritual (Prov. 14:12; 16:25)
- Pray for forgiveness and grace to accept and believe in Christ Jesus as the Bread of life.
