ESOCS Devotional 16 December
TEXT: 3 JOHN 1-14
MEMORY VERSE: “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ; that whether I come and see you or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind, striving together for the faith of the gospel.” Philippians 1:27
In our text today, John expresses great delight over the performance of Brother Gaius in relation to keeping with the truth, as well as his hospitality shown to travelling evangelists for the work of ministry. The mobile evangelists also gave good testimony to the fellowship that Gaius extended to them. In this wise, Gaius was behaving after the truth Jesus revealed to the world (1 John 3:17-19; John 13:34-35). True believers are normally expected to show hospitality to travelling Christians, who may not be in a position to foot costly hotel bills, even if they were total strangers. Such was the case as reported of Brother Gaius, who warmly received some missionaries and teachers of the gospel, and who in turn, had said good words to John concerning Gaius’s hospitality.
The gift of hospitality still serves as a powerful witness today to people who struggle with loneliness, and who are seeking warm and accepting relationships. Also, as expressed in our text, how an individual lives his or her life is important to God. Many walk in darkness, listening to the advice of the wicked and following the ways of worldly people. But God wants us, like Enoch, Noah and Levi, to order our lives in keeping with God’s way to freedom and joy. God wants us to step out in faith and to walk with Him in the light of the truth. By walking in the footsteps of Jesus, and following the examples of servant-hood living, Jesus promises us His company and abundant blessings, including eternal life.
