TEXT: JOHN 6:22-40
MEMORY VERSE: “But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given Me the seal of approval.” John 6:27 NLT
Just like the majority today, there were such people in ancient Israel, who looked for Jesus only for material blessings. In this context, the multitudes followed Him about for the physical bread, instead of the spiritual gains that would come through Him. This class of persons saw in Christ Jesus the opportunity for either economic or political gains, as the ultimate pursuit. This is highly disappointing.
As the Master warned, and irrespective of the social or economic state of any man, the first and major concern of every believer should be for his spiritual poverty, and not his physical poverty. Hence, the Master in Matthew 6:33 cautions, “But seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness …” Unfortunately, the average Christian or believer of today tends to reason the other way. Nonetheless, let it be strongly asserted here that salvation is more important than anything else the world can offer.
Moreover, the food this world provides will endure only until the end of this world. But, The Bread of Life that Jesus offers will preserve the soul throughout eternity (John 4:14, Ephesians 2:8-9). And this Bread is His Body which He offered voluntarily on the cross at Calvary, for human salvation. Hence, in John 1:12, we understand that all who would believe and accept Him shall receive the seal of the Living God unto eternal life. God the Father Himself has ordained that through Jesus Christ, all the world should receive this spiritual food, whereby, whoever believes should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
Conclusively, our heart’s desire and request should be, “Lord, evermore give us this bread.” This was the request of the apostles after Jesus had clearly stated the difference between this Bread of Life, and the manna that their fathers ate in the wilderness (John 6:31-34). Jesus is the Bread of Life. Desire earnestly and eat of this Bread, and ye shall find rest for your soul.
- Jesus is the only Bread that one eats and shall hunger no more. Do you agree?
- Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God; evermore, feed us that we hunger no more.
