ESOCS Devotional 14 September 2026 – Being Accountable To God

MEMORY VERSE: “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.” (Romans 14:12 NLT).

TEXT: ROMANS 14: 12 – 23

So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. 13 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.

14 I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense. 21 It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. 22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

Accountability is essential in the Christian life. It keeps us honest, humble, and focused on our faith. The Bible teaches us to hold each other responsible in both our personal walk and relationships (Proverbs 27:17). Through accountability, we grow spiritually, live more like Christ, and support one another in our struggles.

Personal accountability is a vital part of the Christian journey. We are called to be responsible for our actions and the choices we make, not only to others but also to God. Romans 14:12 reminds us that we will give an account of our lives before God. This brings clarity to our everyday actions and decisions. It serves as a reminder that our lives are not our own, but we are entrusted with the responsibility to honor God with everything we do.

Accountability to God is the foundation of all other forms of accountability. Ecclesiastes 12:14 reminds us that nothing is hidden from God, and He will judge every action, even those done in secret. This verse calls us to live with integrity, knowing that our actions are seen by God and will ultimately be judged by Him. Accountability to God is not just about avoiding sin, but about living in a way that honors Him in every aspect of life.

Being accountable is more than just following rules. It’s a mindset of taking ownership of our behavior and recognizing that our choices impact others and our relationship with God. We are not meant to live in isolation but to be part of a community, both with God and with other believers. When we understand that we are accountable, we become more intentional in how we live our lives. Accountability motivates us to stay true to our values, even when it’s challenging.

Accountability helps us to be able to understand people better and not to judge or condemn them because they are not like us (Romans 14:13). Rather it helps up to be able to see people through the eyes of Jesus Christ and to learn to love them as Jesus has instructed.

Personal accountability is essential for spiritual growth as it helps us to better understand matters of the Kingdom (Romans 14: 17 – 19). When we acknowledge our mistakes and weaknesses, we open ourselves up to God’s grace and the strength to change. It pushes us to continually strive for holiness. Without personal accountability, we risk drifting away from God’s will and becoming disconnected from the true purpose He has for us.

Finally, accountability helps us not to tear down the work of God or to discriminate against the God’s family because we know for certain that we are meant to be our brothers’ keeper (Romans 14: 20 – 23).  We should strive to build relationships where honesty is valued, and both people are committed to supporting each other’s growth in Christ. When accountability is practiced with grace and understanding, it strengthens both the individual and the relationship.

Challenges:

  • Reflect daily on your actions and decisions, considering how they align with God’s Word.
  • Set aside time for self-examination and prayer, seeking God’s guidance on how to improve in accountability.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding us that we are accountable to You above all. We acknowledge that every action, even those done in secret, will be judged by You. Help us live with integrity, honoring You in every decision we make in Jesus name. Amen.
