ESOCS Devotional 13 June 2026 – Press For The Word
MEMORY VERSE: “And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret” Luke 5:1 KJV
TEXT: Luke 5: 1-11
So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” 6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.

Many a time people are under the pressures that life brings. They are financial, health, family, career, and security pressures. Some ministries are under pressure. But the good news is that under these conditions, if we press for the word of God, we would exist in pleasure without pressure.
Being witnesses of the power in the word of God and the divers manifestations of miracles, signs, and wonders of the teaching ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, the multitude pushed and crowded Him to hear more of the word of God. Ministers have the burden to raise children and congregation that are hungry for God’s word.
In this critical time when people are more in love with their phones, social media, fashion and frivolities of life, we need to nurture and raise a generation that can say, like the psalmist, “How sweet are thy word unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103 KJV). People should practically come running after God’s word, to hear and practise it; for it guarantees God’s blessings; for it is written, “…Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28 KJV).
It is worthy of note that the people pressed on Jesus to hear the word of God. We are also highly obligated to raise well-trained teachers, willing teachers, and the teachers that would be present to attend to the needs of the people. All parents must be committed teachers from their homes. Above all, we need teachers that would teach the practical truth of God’s word, not diluted or heretical teachers.
