TEXT: EXODUS 32: 1-14
MEMORY VERSE: “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what become of him” (Exodus 32:1 KJV).
Idols again! Even though Israel had seen the invisible God in action, they still wanted the familiar gods they could see and shape into whatever image they desired. This summarizes our Bible passage. But in doing so, they were ignoring the command He had just given them: “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” (Exodus 20:4). How much like them we are!
To many believers today, their stock in trade is still to shape God to their liking, to make Him convenient to obey or ignore. The gods we create blind us to the love God wants to shower on us. But God cannot work in us when we elevate anyone or anything above him. Even if we do not make idols, we are often guilty of trying to make God in our image, ‘molding’ Him to fit our expectations, desires, and circumstances. When we do this, we end up worshipping ourselves rather than God who created us.
Today, some belong to one cult fraternity or the other; some have theirs in the forest, shrine, river, or cave. To others, many other things so precious to them have become their god. They elevate them than God (if God is in their thought at all). The lesson for us is that self-worship leads to all kinds of immorality. He is a jealous God and will unleash His anger when He will. Again, Idol worshipping is bad. It angers God beyond imagination (Exodus 20:5b). Which God do you serve? Examine yourself now.
- Examine yourself. Are there false gods (not only graven images) in your life that you worship?
- If there are, sincerely ask God for mercy. Repent, and ask Him to help you detach from them.
