TEXT: 1 JOHN 2:12-29
MEMORY VERSE: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32 KJV
In St. John Gospel Chapter 14:6, Jesus Himself declared thus, “… I AM the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John here introduces the word ‘truth’ in reference to the behavioural standard by which Christians must conduct themselves and their lives (John 2:29; 3:19; John 4:7-19; John 17:17). That standard is after the nature of the Eternal Logos, who revealed the light from God in which Christians must live. Anyone who is not living in fellowship with God and the brethren, is not living his life after the truth. But the one who is in fellowship with God and the brethren, is the one who is behaving after the truth, and thus, he is walking in the light (v 3).
In the early church (even as we still see today), some false teachers tried to lead believers astray. Therefore, John writes to remind Christians of the truth about the anti-Christ who had left the church, denied the basic teachings of Jesus, and were exerting influence on believers to the contrary. John, therefore, teaches that Jesus is the Christ, God’s Son, who came in the flesh for redemption of mankind (John 1:14). John instructs that Christians should live by the truth (that is in love). It therefore informs that, amidst the conflicting vagaries of earthly living, Christians should be guided by the word of God, which is the only source of truth about God, Jesus, and mankind.
When we know the truth, and we live in relationship with the one who is the truth, our immediate and remote surroundings will radiate light, because Jesus is the word and the light.
