TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 1:20-28
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:28 KJV
Just like making new year resolutions without keeping them as with many people, many Christians when in pain and agony arising from life’s challenges, make many vows in different church denominations where they went for prayers, but will not fulfil even one when God answers their prayer. Hannah’s attitude as recorded in our text is to teach us that we must be faithful; we must fulfil our vow to God.
Hannah was barren and became an object of cruel mocking by her husband’s other wife, Peninnah who had children. In bitterness of soul, she prayed to God and made a vow that if God answered her prayer, she would give him (back) to God all the days of his life (v 11). The Lord answered her and she conceived and bore a son (v 20). Hannah came back when it was time for her to fulfil her vow and did so with a thankful heart.
The first lesson from our text is that we must follow through on our vow by fulfilling it. Another lesson is that what we are giving MUST be that which we vowed to give – Hannah gave up what she wanted most, her son. The third lesson is that as we do so, we are dedicating our entire life and future to God.
You are your word, so live by what you say.
- Did you make any vow that you did not fulfil?
- Pray to God to help you remember, restitute and remain faithful, going forward.
