The Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Sir Chidi Lloyd, has approved the desilting of the Abaka Canal in Rumuche-Emohua to clear accumulated refuse obstructing the free flow of water through the waterway.
The approval was contained in a statement signed by Bright Jossy-Elendu, Special Adviser to the Chairman on Information and Strategic Communication, following Lloyd’s inspection of the collapsed Abaka Bridge on Tuesday.
Accompanied by a team of civil engineers and environmental scientists, Lloyd blamed the collapse of the bridge on the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into the canal by residents.
He condemned what he described as the indiscipline and unpatriotic attitude of residents who dump refuse in the canal, saying the accumulated waste had obstructed the free flow of water through the adequately provided channels.
The Council Chairman, however, assured that necessary steps were being taken to bring the situation to the attention of the Rivers State Government for appropriate intervention on the collapsed bridge.
Lloyd also frowned at the incessant dumping of refuse along the Rumuakunde axis of the East-West Road, noting that the council had recently deployed equipment to evacuate a refuse heap defacing the area.
He accused those responsible for the renewed dumping of waste of deliberately undermining his administration’s efforts to improve environmental sanitation in the local government area.
