DCLM Daily Manna 7 June 2026: Foundation of True Gospel
KEY VERSE: “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel” (2 Timothy 2:8).
TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:8-13 KJV
Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, 9 for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
11 This is a faithful saying:
For if we died with Him,
We shall also live with Him.
12 If we endure,
We shall also reign with Him.
If we deny Him,
He also will deny us.
13 If we are faithless,
He remains faithful;
He cannot deny Himself.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the venerated and influential minister of the London Metropolitan Tabernacle, is remembered for many things. His preaching, catalogues of sermons, autobiography, Bible commentaries, numerous books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, and hymns remain exceptional gifts to the body of Christ worldwide. However, none of these is as pungent and memorable as his first words on his first day on the pulpit of the Metropolitan Temple church. “I would propose that the subject of the ministry of this house, as long as this platform shall stand, and as long as this house shall be frequented by worshipers, shall be the person of Jesus Christ… if I am asked what is my creed, I reply, “It is Jesus Christ.”… the legacy to which I would pin and bind myself forever, God helping me,…is Jesus Christ, who is the arm and substance of the gospel, who is in Himself all theology, the incarnation of every precious truth.”
In his second letter to Timothy, his faithful and reliable son in the Lord, Paul the apostle did not forget to emphasise the centrality of Jesus Christ and His gospel. In the first letter, Paul warned Timothy to beware of false prophets and teachers of the law whose focus is fables and genealogies, devoid of godly edification. Now, Paul concludes his letter to Timothy by reminding him that while laying the foundation of doctrinal purity, Jesus Christ remains the cornerstone. The true gospel is incomplete without teachings on the life, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Removing a cornerstone is akin to degrading the whole structure. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the gospel of salvation to the world. Without Him, gospel preaching, crusades, church meetings and other religious activities are not worth the effort. The central focus of the Christian life and ministry therefore must be Jesus. If we are going to experience a strong and firm Christian life that cannot be shaken and moved by the storms of life, then we must ensure that we stay on this cornerstone. Those who shift their gaze and emphasis away from Christ to embrace the popular trends of modernism and relative philosophies will definitely sink and be swept away by the tides and storms of life. Nothing must separate us from the love of God revealed through salvation in Jesus Christ, our Saviour. This is our sure anchor for life and eternity. Jesus only.
