A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of social commentator, Justice Chidebere, widely known as “Justice Crack,” in the custody of the State Security Services (SSS) over alleged cybercrime-related offences.
The defendant was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on cybercrime, breach of public peace, and felony. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During proceedings, SSS counsel, Mark Oruba, urged the court to remand the accused in custody, citing public security concerns. However, defence counsel opposed the request, stating that although they had received the charges, a formal bail application would be filed later in the week.
Presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, subsequently ordered that Justice Crack be held in SSS custody pending the commencement of trial and the hearing of his bail application, scheduled for May 25.
In a statement issued on May 2, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the defendant was arrested following a social media post highlighting complaints by soldiers over feeding and welfare.
According to the Army, further investigations suggested that his engagement with the soldiers extended beyond welfare advocacy, alleging that his actions were aimed at inciting discontent within the military ranks.
