A High Court in Port Harcourt has restrained the planned election of the Nigerian Bar Association Port Harcourt Branch following a legal dispute over the branch’s electoral register.
The court order came after a suit was filed by Godstime Elewa, Daminabo Davies and Odinaka Emenike, who alleged that the voters’ register included the names of individuals they described as imposters. They urged the court to suspend the election until a credible and verified register is compiled.
Presiding over the matter, Justice Sika Aprioku ordered the NBA leadership and its Electoral Committee to produce a valid electoral register before conducting the election. The case was subsequently adjourned until July 6.
The election had been slated for Friday, just before the expiration of the tenure of the branch chairman, Cordelia Eke, on June 27.
