South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who recently represented the country at the ongoing World Cup, has died at the age of 25.
The country’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, announced Adams’ death in a statement on Saturday, describing the news as a huge loss to South African football.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents,” McKenzie said.
The minister did not reveal the cause of death.
Meanwhile, police confirmed they had launched an investigation after the body of the 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Adams featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches at the ongoing World Cup but did not play in the team’s knockout-stage defeat to Canada.
