Many people, including soldiers, are feared dead following an attack by suspected terrorists on Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Monday.
According to reports, the attack occurred at about 3:00 a.m. and was allegedly preceded by a threat letter sent to the community, heightening tension among residents in the days leading up to the incident.
The assailants reportedly struck under the cover of darkness, firing gunshots indiscriminately and throwing the community into panic as residents fled for safety.
Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, were said to have responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted until about 5:00 a.m.
A source from Kaiama TV confirmed the development, stating that security agents battled the attackers for hours in an attempt to repel the assault.
The attackers were also reported to have launched an explosive device at a military camp in the area, causing significant damage before advancing further into the community.
During the exchange of fire, casualties were recorded among security personnel, with some soldiers feared killed, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
The attackers were said to have carted away military patrol vehicles and motorcycles before fleeing the scene.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
