Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms has confirmed and announced the resignation of Police Chief, Erika Shields from her position. This was after 150 persons protested outside a restaurant on Friday, in Atlanta.
The mayor who made the announcement at a Press conference on Saturday, said Police Chief, Erika Shields had submitted her resignation after a Black man, 27 year old Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by a white Police officer, during a struggle.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the victim who was shot during a struggle had been asleep in his car in a Wendy’s drive-thru, causing other customers to drive around the car. When Police arrived the scene and wanted to arrest Brooks, he resisted the arrest and ran away. He was chased by the officers who shot him and he later died after surgery at a local hospital, the Bureau noted.
The death of Brooks is likely to spark more protests, as many cities across the US are already witnessing series of protests following the death of a Black American George Floyd by a White Police officer.
