The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar has appointed lawyer, actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his presidential campaign spokesperson ahead of the 2027 general election.
The appointment was confirmed in a letter signed by Atiku, who said the decision reflects his confidence in Okonkwo’s competence, communication skills, integrity and political judgment.
According to the letter, Okonkwo will serve as the campaign’s spokesperson, representing Atiku’s public positions and leading the campaign’s communication efforts in line with party, legal and ethical requirements.
Atiku also expressed confidence that Okonkwo would make valuable contributions to the campaign and promote democratic engagement as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the ADC’s choice of a vice-presidential candidate, a development that fuelled speculation about differences within the party. His new role is seen as an indication that both men have resolved their differences ahead of the election.
As campaign spokesperson, Okonkwo is expected to communicate the candidate’s policies, engage with the media, respond to public issues and help shape the campaign’s messaging.
The appointment has drawn reactions from political observers, with many watching closely to see how the partnership develops as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather pace.
