The Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) has closed all unapproved refuse collection points across Old Government Reservation Area (GRA), Port Harcourt, and constructed a standard waste receptacle on Forces Avenue to curb indiscriminate dumping.
The Managing Director of RIWAMA, Dr. Ibimina Wokoma, disclosed this while highlighting the agency’s ongoing efforts to improve waste management practices and restore Port Harcourt’s Garden City status.
Dr. Wokoma said the new facility, built in partnership with My-Ace China, was designed to provide residents with designated waste disposal points and ensure the timely evacuation of refuse by approved contractors.
As part of its drive to promote responsible waste disposal in public and private institutions, RIWAMA also provided two standard waste bins and a plastic waste collection rack to the prestigious Port Harcourt Club 1928 in Old GRA.
Dr. Wokoma urged households and businesses to patronise only agency-approved Private Service Providers (PSPs) for waste collection, warning residents against using cart pushers and illegal scavengers who dump refuse in drains and unauthorised locations.
He added that the Forces Avenue model would be replicated across Old and New GRA, as well as other residential areas in Port Harcourt, to strengthen the state’s waste management system.
Dr. Wokoma further reminded residents to dispose of their waste at designated receptacles between 6pm and 10pm daily.
In his response, the President of Port Harcourt Club 1928, Sir Victor Omubo Frank-Briggs, expressed appreciation to RIWAMA and commended Dr. Wokoma for his foresight and professional approach to waste management across Rivers State.
