The Federal Ministry of Education has commenced the training of 45 master trainers from 15 teacher training institutions on safe learning environments, gender-responsive pedagogy and digital skills.
Boriowo Folasade, Director, Press and Public Relations in a statement said the three-day Master Trainers Workshop, held in Abuja, is expected to enable the participants to cascade the training to about 500 teachers and educators across the country.
Representing the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, the Director of the College of Education, Dr Uchenna Uba, said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that increased access to education was matched by protection, inclusion and effective learning.
Uba also stressed the need to equip teachers to recognise and respond appropriately to abuse, while protecting the dignity and wellbeing of learners.
She highlighted the National Policy on Anti-Bullying in Nigerian Schools and said teachers must be adequately prepared to create safe and supportive learning environments.
The participants are being trained in gender-responsive pedagogy, prevention and response to school-related gender-based violence, safe learning environments and the integration of Information and Communication Technology into teaching.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with UNESCO, the Government of Japan, the African Union and other development partners to strengthen teacher development and promote inclusive education.
The workshop is part of efforts by the ministry to improve teacher capacity and ensure that children across Nigeria learn in safe, inclusive and supportive environments.
