Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is among dignitaries expected to attend the coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town.
The Opobo Council of Chiefs disclosed this during a press briefing at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Speaking on behalf of the council, its Vice Chairman, Alabo Princewill Wogo-Dappa, said the coronation activities would culminate in the grand ceremony, describing the occasion as a significant moment in the history of the kingdom.
“This is a significant moment in the history of Opobo Kingdom. The throne of King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most historic traditional institutions in the Niger Delta, with a legacy deeply associated with the courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership of King Jaja of Opobo. The coronation of Jeki VI marks the continuation of an enduring institution and the opening of a new chapter in the life of the Kingdom,” he said.
Wogo-Dappa explained that the council had undertaken a series of diplomatic and traditional visits as part of preparations for the coronation, including engagements with traditional rulers and national leaders.
He said the former president was among those visited during the engagements, which were aimed at strengthening historic relationships and extending formal invitations to the coronation.
According to him, the event would showcase the rich heritage, culture, traditional institutions and history of Opobo Kingdom, while providing an opportunity for indigenes at home and in the diaspora to unite around the throne and future of the kingdom.
He invited Rivers State residents, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and members of the international community to join the kingdom in celebrating the occasion.
The council also appealed to the media to help tell the wider story of Opobo, which he described as one of heritage, resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity.
Wogo-Dappa urged residents and visitors to cooperate with arrangements being made for security, traffic management, protocol and general coordination ahead of the event.
He added that Opobo Town would witness another defining moment in its history on September 26 when King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, is formally crowned.
